eDNA for tracking endangered species

Endangered species monitoring has a difficult constraint: the species are, by definition, rare and often intolerant of disturbance. eDNA solves both problems. It is sensitive enough to detect species at densities where conventional methods fail, and it is entirely non-invasive.

The sensitivity case

Species-specific qPCR routinely detects target species from a single water sample at densities of a few individuals per kilometer of stream. Comparable sensitivity from electrofishing or trapping would require weeks of field effort per site.

Non-invasive monitoring

For species already stressed by habitat loss or disease, adding capture stress to the picture can accelerate decline. eDNA collects a water or soil sample without touching the animal — critical for taxa such as freshwater mussels, bog turtles, and certain salamanders.

Range-wide surveillance

Because sampling is fast and cheap, eDNA makes it feasible to survey range-wide rather than at a handful of long-term study sites. Occupancy modeling on the resulting data gives a much better picture of true distribution than intensive-few-sites monitoring.

Early detection of arrivals and losses

eDNA has repeatedly detected the arrival of invasive species and the extirpation of native species years earlier than visual surveys — critical lead time for management response.
