eDNA for environmental impact assessments

Environmental impact assessments have historically relied on point-in-time visual surveys that often miss the rare, cryptic, or seasonally absent species that later become the biggest permitting hurdles. eDNA is rapidly becoming a standard complementary method for EIAs across North America and Europe.

What eDNA adds to an EIA

A conventional multi-day herpetological survey might catch a few visible salamanders. eDNA on the same sites typically returns the full amphibian community present in the previous few weeks — including species missed by direct observation because of timing, weather, or life stage.

For fish surveys in headwater streams, wetland delineations, and cave and karst systems, eDNA is often the only method that reliably detects the full community without invasive collection.

Defensibility

Regulators are increasingly comfortable with eDNA data when sampling design, chain of custody, and lab QA are documented. The workflow is repeatable, quantitative, and produces an audit trail that visual surveys often lack.

The best practice is to use eDNA as one leg of a multi-method assessment: eDNA for community completeness, targeted surveys for the species that trigger regulatory review.

Cost and timeline

Per species detected, eDNA is typically several times cheaper than the equivalent multi-visit conventional survey. Field time drops sharply. The tradeoff is lab turnaround — two to six weeks — which needs to be built into the project schedule.

Best-fit project types

Linear infrastructure (pipelines, transmission corridors, roads), development on wetlands or streams, mining and quarry expansions, and any project where rare or endangered species presence would trigger consultation. In all of these, eDNA reduces the risk of a late-stage surprise.
