eDNA for invasive species early detection

Every invasive species case study makes the same point: early detection is the difference between manageable eradication and permanent presence. eDNA is now the standard early-detection tool for aquatic invasives and is expanding into terrestrial and forest pest surveillance.

The aquatic invasives case

Species-specific qPCR assays now exist for zebra and quagga mussels, silver and bighead carp, northern snakehead, Asian clams, hydrilla, and many others. Sampling programs routinely catch first arrivals months to years before visual confirmation.

For programs managing multiple invasive fronts, a small number of water samples per site can be tested against a panel of assays cheaply.

Forest and terrestrial pests

Soil eDNA is increasingly used to detect invasive earthworms, jumping worms, and root pathogens. Bark and trap eDNA has been used to detect forest pests including spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer at low densities.

Sampling design

Early detection sampling concentrates effort at high-risk introduction points — boat ramps, ports, nursery outlets, popular recreation sites. Wide spatial coverage matters more than intensive sampling at any one point.

Rapid response

eDNA results are useful only if they trigger action. Programs that couple eDNA surveillance with clear response protocols — dive teams, herbicide crews, quarantine measures — see the actual management wins.
