Building a pollinator corridor across neighborhoods

A single pollinator garden is an island. Connected corridors of pollinator habitat across a neighborhood — even loose ones — are functional migration and dispersal routes. The organizing math is straightforward: connectivity matters more than absolute area for many pollinator species.

The 100-meter rule

Many solitary bees have foraging ranges of a few hundred meters. Pollinator corridors work when suitable habitat patches are within roughly that distance of each other. That is often the difference between adjacent yards — a corridor is well within reach if a few neighbors participate.

How to organize one

Start with a map. Identify the yards, easements, rights-of-way, and municipal strips within a target area. Approach neighbors one at a time with a specific ask — a strip of native asters, a milkweed patch, a no-mow front bed — rather than a vague call for participation.

Municipal partners help. City parks, right-of-way managers, and school groundskeepers control large connected acreage and are increasingly receptive to native seed mixes.

What to plant

Sequential bloom is the primary design goal. Anything blooming in a dead week — early spring, midsummer heat, late fall — is more valuable than another midsummer flower. Milkweeds for monarchs, native asters and goldenrods for late-season generalists, willows and maples for early-season bees.

Measuring corridor use

Casual visual counts miss most of the pollinator community. Flower swab eDNA taken at several nodes along a corridor is the most efficient way to show that the corridor is actually being used by the diversity of species you designed for — and to attract the funders and municipal partners you need to expand it.
