Moths vs butterflies: the hidden pollinator majority in your yard

For every butterfly species in your yard there are roughly ten moth species — and moths do more of the actual work of pollination in most temperate ecosystems. If your idea of the local pollinator community is limited to what visits flowers in daylight, you are missing most of it.
How to tell them apart
Butterflies fly by day, have clubbed antennae, and hold their wings vertically at rest. Moths are mostly nocturnal, have feathered or thread-like antennae, and hold wings flat or tented. Exceptions exist — hummingbird clearwing moths fly by day and look like tiny hummingbirds — but the rules of thumb catch most species.
Why moths matter for pollination
Many native plants — evening primroses, moonflowers, jimsonweeds, certain orchids — depend heavily on nocturnal moth pollination. Even generalist flowers that are visited by bees during the day often receive substantial nighttime moth service that goes unnoticed.
Because moth species turnover is high across seasons and habitats, moth diversity is one of the better rough indicators of local plant and habitat diversity.
Seeing your yard moth community
A porch light with a white sheet on a warm humid night reveals dozens of species in a couple of hours. UV or mercury vapor lights pull in more. Bait strips of fermented sugar attract underwing moths.

Caterpillar hosts and yard design
Moth larvae are the reason songbirds have anything to feed nestlings. A single chickadee brood requires several thousand caterpillars. Yards with native trees — especially oaks, willows, cherries, and birches — support orders of magnitude more caterpillar biomass than yards planted with non-native ornamentals.

Yes. Long-term light pollution disorients and depletes local moth populations. Warm-colored, downward-shielded, motion-activated lighting minimizes the impact.
