Nature programs for schools: bringing real DNA science into the classroom

Students remember the day they waded into a creek with gloves and a sample vial. eDNA turns that field trip into authentic science with real results back from the lab.
What students do
Students form hypotheses about which species live nearby, collect water or soil samples using clean technique, fill in datasheets, and later analyze the species list returned from sequencing.
Standards alignment
The activity supports NGSS performance expectations on ecosystems, biodiversity, and human impact (for example LS2 and LS4), and science practices such as planning investigations and analyzing data.
Running it with a full class
Split the class into small teams with assigned roles: collector, recorder, photographer, and quality-control lead. Each team samples a different station so results can be compared.
Extending the lesson
Repeat each year and let new students compare against past classes. The school builds its own long-term dataset — a powerful story for families and grant funders.
