How it works
Fish shed DNA constantly. Filtering water captures that DNA, and sequencing identifies the species present.
Strengths
Safe for volunteers and students, gentle on rare species, and effective in deep or murky water.
Limits
eDNA gives presence and relative signal rather than exact counts or sizes; pair with traditional surveys when you need length and age data.
