Amphibian monitoring in vernal pools and wetlands

Amphibians are sensitive indicators of wetland health, but many species are secretive and seasonal.
Timing
Sample in early spring when breeding adults and eggs are present and pools are full.
Methods
Night call surveys for frogs, egg mass counts for wood frogs and spotted salamanders, and eDNA to capture species missed by both.
Protecting pools
Documented amphibian use strengthens the case for buffers and protection of these small but critical wetlands.
